Time stops at old mill – Huddersfield Examiner, 6th June 2007

You could set your watch by it. But now one of Huddersfield’s most famous clocks has been stopped!

The clock at Newsome Mill at Ruth Street in Newsome has been stopped by developers Royalle Estates, while they carry out demolition on buildings at the rear of the mill.

The Cheshire-based developer says the historic clock was stopped to protect the mechanisms from the noise and vibrations caused by the work.

It is hoped the clock will be restored to its ticking glory in two months when the demolition is finished.

Royalle Estates will replace parts of the former textile mill with modern flats and town houses, but the listed clock and tower will be preserved.

Newsome Mill was founded in 1827 and occupied by textile firm Taylor and Littlewood. In recent years the mill has housed various businesses.
